Spotlight: Evan Roderick

1. Where are you from?
Vancouver, British Columbia.

2. Where do you live?
Mostly in Vancouver, but I move around for work. I recently just moved back from Toronto.

3. At what age did you start wanting to do this job?
Around sixteen was when I really started researching what it might be like to work as an actor. Before then it was just something I fantasized about.

4.  What was your background to get there?
Well, when I started, I virtually knew zero people who could help me get my bearings in the industry. I think it all started with my Mom, and I literally typing in on Google “How do you get an agent?” That lead to acting class, meeting other actors, and eventually getting work.

5. What kind of movies do you like to see?
I like so many genres. It really depends on what’s available and what catches my eye. I just recently watched Parasite, and was blown away.

6. What kind of movie/role do you like to play in?
It depends on the project. If I feel it’s a story and journey that I want to be a part of telling, then I’ll do it.

7. What personality/actors inspired you to do this?
Before I got all serious about cinema, I think watching my Dad tell stories at family dinners and get-togethers was a big inspiration.  I liked the way he would use his voice and body to talk about people and places. He inspired me a lot in that way.

8. Please describe your everyday life?
It depends if I’m working. It almost always involves exercise, coffee and reading scripts.

9. What’s the best opportunity you received?
That’s tough. In terms of opportunities in my work I’d have to say being a part of Spinning Out.

10. Tell us about your role in Spinning Out. What are your feelings about this TV Show?
I play Justin Davis, an elite pairs skater destined for the Olympics. However, he has a bad attitude and a penchant for partying that sometimes gets in the way of him maximizing his potential.

11. If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
Probably James Davis, I always loved his dialogue in the show.

12. Has this series been beneficial in your professional journey?
Of course. I think everybody on this project, whether it be actors or show runners, had a wealth of knowledge that was apparent in their work. I think beyond everything else, the amount of knowledge I have gained from being on set with them was paramount.

13. Is it easier to play a character in film and TV or to be on stage?
They’re different. In film you get the chance to be more subtle with how you portray a character, and you get more chances, often times several takes. Theatre can be nerve-racking because you only get one shot and, if you screw up, it’s not so fun.

14. What do you think is the key to success in your field?
I’m not sure I have the answer to that yet, haha. However, if I had to guess, I’d say resilience.

15. What is next for you?
I’ve got a couple things on the horizon, not sure I’m allowed to disclose any of that at the moment. But I’m very excited to be sharing some new work with you soon.

16. What is your motto in life?
It’s always changing. But right now? Stay the course.
