How does being from New York play into your career?
New York is tough and strong, It builds thick skin, but it is also alluring and magical. It inspires you to think big. I grew up in the musical theater scene.. I was 11 doing professional plays and being homeschooled backstage. that was the beginning of my love for music. One of my castmates from one musical brought me into my first studio session, and I never stopped writing music since.

Who inspires you as an artist?
Life. art museums/ gallery’s , walks through central park, overhearing conversations, the ocean, being in nature, books, films, my friends, and my family.

Have there been moments or milestones so far in your career that have felt particularly meaningful to you ?
It’s cliché but getting my first gold record plaque in the mail for my collaboration with Blackbear for his album Digital Druglord was important for me, and now it’s platinum!

Please share more on your creative process--from writing your own music to co-producing it.
I always start with creating the music and the energy of the song with my producers. If the music is “right” the lyric and melodies soon follow. I prefer writing the chorus first and then working backwards to the first verse/pre/ second verse/bridge. We add production elements as we write little by little, record a final vocal, and then dig in more on the sound and finishing touches.

What are some of the biggest obstacles you have overcome in your career?
The constant struggle of dealing with imposter syndrome. the notion that you and your art aren’t good enough. At the end of the day, I make music for myself. It’s a necessary process for me to release what I hold back from the world, and if other people connect with my music and get something from it, it’s just the cherry on top.

Is there anyone in the industry with whom you would love to collaborate?
Dev Hynes of Blood Orange is brilliant. I would love to write something with him one day.

Can you share with us the story/inspiration behind “Saddest, Happy Girl” ?
Initially I wrote the chorus just as a little challenge for myself to use a nursery rhyme melody and write a new song from it. I chose clementine and posted it online, soon after the response I finished writing it into a full song and dropped it pretty soon after.

Do you have any other projects coming up or in the works ?
I am planning on continuously releasing new singles independently, adding on to the same project as saddest, happy girl.
