WANT! “Functional Chic: Utility Pockets”

Ah, pockets! Those magical little spaces in our clothing that seem to defy the laws of physics by holding everything from our phone to our keys to that mysterious crumpled-up piece of paper we can never quite remember the purpose of. In recent years, everyone has become crazed with owning cargos in every way, shape, or form due to their numerous pockets and rugged aesthetic. They have become the perfect combination of form and function. Let's delve into how these pockets took over so many fashion circles.

It all started in 1938, when members of the British Armed Forces started wearing ‘battledress.’ A few years later, the U.S. Army added modifications and wore “paratrooper pants.” These pants provided ample storage space without the need for a bulky backpack or extra pouches, making them a convenient choice for soldiers. They became the known uniform of the army, but their effortless function began to attract those involved in outdoor activities as well. Now, they're making a fashionable comeback in every way.

These bottoms, heavily adorned in utility pockets, made their first appearance in the fashion scene during the 90s and quickly rose to popularity among fashion enthusiasts. Over time, designers began experimenting with the concept and introduced other variations of the style. One of the first spin-offs was the cargo shorts, which were the same design but with a shorter length. As fashion evolved, those who preferred a more feminine silhouette began wearing cargo skirts. These skirts incorporated the signature pockets in a stylish manner, attracting wearers to embrace the utilitarian style in a chic way. Recently, cargo vests and shirts have become popular additions to the utility pocket space.

Today, you won’t find streetwear or high fashion outfits without pocket embellishments. From luxury brands like Fendi and Givenchy to fast fashion chains like Zara and Urban Outfitters, everyone has developed their version of these functional garments. The traditional pockets have been reconstructed in an assortment of dimensions and designs, and are often decorated with attachments like zippers and buckles. These utility pockets have evolved from their humble beginning into statement pieces that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. They have gone from military service to the runway, demonstrating the ever-growing popularity of their practical design.
